The workshop "Roman cultural heritage as a driver of tourism and local/regional development" was successfully held on Monday, January 17, 2022 in the organization of the ISTER project and the Regional Agency for Development and European Integration Belgrade.
Representatives from the cultural, tourist and non-governmental sector gathered in the Roman Hall of the Belgrade City Library to discuss the promotion and preservation of the Roman cultural heritage on the foundations of the ancient Singidunum. Part of the participants also joined the workshop via the online platform.
At the very beginning of the workshop, Marija Janjić, the manager of the ISTER project for Serbia, presented the ISTER project and the results achieved during the first year of the implementation of this international project, as well as the activities that will be implemented in the following period.
The international project ISTER aims to rediscover and restore the ancient network of Roman roads and international settlements of the Danube region, as a key driver in the promotion of territorial development. ISTER promotes this Roman network of roads and settlements as an opportunity to strengthen the territorial competitiveness and sustainable growth of the Danube region through the creation of a new ISTER eco-cultural route.
In the continuation of the workshop, the tourist potential and possibilities of the Danube region in Serbia were discussed, especially in the field of cultural tourism. Rafael Pupovac from the Regional Agency for Development and European Integration, Belgrade, presented socio-economic trends in the field of tourism in Serbia, with reference to the impact of the COVID pandemic and future trends resulting from it. Local examples of good practice in the field of protection and promotion of Roman cultural heritage are presented, as well as the chances and opportunities that represent the future of cultural heritage in the territory of Serbia, but also in the entire Danube region.
A significant part of the ISTER international route passes through Serbia and follows the course of the Danube, better known as the ISTER river in the Roman period. During the workshop, archaeologist Rade Milić from the Center for Urban Development took us back 2000 years and took us on a tour of Roman roads and settlements along the Danube in Serbia, the stations of the ISTER route. From refreshing in the Roman baths of Bononia or today's Banoštor, through a visit to the Taurunum-Zemun military fortress and the Singidunum-Belgrade municipality, on the way to Viminacium, one of the most important centers of the province, all the way to Trajan's Bridge, the remains of which are today evidenced by Trajan's tablet located in the heart of the Djerdap Gorge.
By creating the ISTER GIS Atlas and mobile application, this In the coming period, the eco-cultural route will become available to everyone, and we hope to lead some new travelers in the footsteps of the Romans. Follow us for more information!
