ISTER project presented during the workshop of the Archaeological Institute

During the online workshop of the international project Living Danube Limes, organized on June 22, 2022 by the Archaeological Institute Belgrade, the goals and key activities of the ISTER project were presented.

The international project ISTER aims to rediscover and restore the ancient network of Roman roads and settlements along the Danube region. ISTER promotes this network of roads and settlements as an opportunity to strengthen the territorial competitiveness and sustainable growth of the Danube region through the creation of a new VIA ISTER eco-cultural route.

At the very beginning of the workshop, the project Living Danube Limes was presented. Like ISTER, this project is implemented under the auspices of the Danube Transnational Program and deals with the valorization of cultural heritage and the promotion of sustainable tourism through nurturing the common Roman cultural heritage along the Danube area, as a basis for the development of a new cultural route.

Nemanja Mrđić and Snežana Golubović from the Archaeological Institute, as representatives of one of the project partners of the Living Danube Limes project from Serbia, announced the upcoming activities of the project and the eagerly awaited cruise replica of the Roman galley "Danuvia Alacris", which will soon to start on their way along the Danube, and through Serbia sail during September 2022.

In the continuation of the workshop, Milena Krklješ from the Faculty of Technical Sciences from Novi Sad spoke about the cultural and architectural heritage along the Danube and its huge potential for urban and tourist development, and presented to the participants some of the pearls of construction along the Danube in Serbia.

Jelena Anđelković Grašar from the Archaeological Institute Belgrade then spoke about the importance of education and the transfer of knowledge with the aim of better visibility and sustainability of cultural heritage through the successful example of Viminacium Archaeological Park and numerous educational activities that the park offers to its visitors.

On behalf of the Tourist Organization of Serbia, Smiljana Novičić addressed the workshop participants and highlighted the importance of cultural heritage for the development of tourism in the whole of Serbia and new trends in tourism that are the focus and interest of tourists. they put precisely the cultural heritage.

After that, Marija Janjić, project manager ISTER, addressed the participants of the workshop from various cultural and educational institutions, public and economic sectors and presented the goals of the project and its key elements:

  • GIS Atlas ISTER route - a database on Roman cultural heritage and Roman roads along Danube,
  • ISTER interactive tool - an application that will be available to everyone in the coming period and will be a practical guide through the rich Roman cultural heritage of the Danube region, with suggested routes that will lead some new travelers in the footsteps of the Romans!
  • Plan for marking the ISTER route by installing signposts designed on the model of Roman mileposts that marked roads in Roman times.

On at the very end of the workshop, the problems, opportunities, key stakeholders and chances for better presentation and utilization of the cultural heritage of the Danube and Serbia in order to develop tourism at the local and national level were discussed. href="https://twitter.com/interregister" id="">Twitter l LinkedIn
